Well, where do I start?!!
First off, YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY! Congratulations, Mr. President.
The First Family will be hooping in the White House for another 4 years. *happy sigh* Yeah, I know. Lots of work to do. Hopefully he’ll be kicking ass and taking names this term. No more non-partisan shit. That didn’t work so well. But I digress…
Hooping! yes, I’ve been hooping and have reached a strange crossroad. It’s been the one thing I do that makes me happy and has kept me sane through the unemployment, the financial disaster that is about to become my life. Folks are always amazed that I’ve remained so calm. Since I haven’t missed a mortgage payment, I haven’t hit full on panic – yet. But I am not making money doing what I love and I’m starting to struggle with that. If I end up counting on my hoop classes and hoop sales won’t that make my passion a burden? I’ve been feeling like removing the hoop making aspect of my business – getting the tapes and tubing out of my home and enlist someone else to make all of my hoops. It feels good when I think about it but if I don’t make them myself, are they really HulaHoopla hoops?
I took a couple of workshops recently with Brecken and Luna Breeze and it felt SOOOOO good to be the student again. I want to grow and pass that one to my students. My classes are still fun and rewarding. The rent is killing me but I know I actually have a good deal on the place where I teach. I think I need to ramp up the promotions.
And then there’s performing. I’d love to do more of that. Maybe get some corporate gigs with The Spinnerettes. Hmmmmmm….
I can’t be the only hoop business owner who has struggled with this. Maybe I need to start a collective where we can brainstorm, share our stories, help each other out.
I know I need to write more on this blog – I’m starting to feel better already!!!
Bonnie found her holiday hoop picture. Thank you!
And here it is!!!
We did some hooping at Center Stage Studios on November 29th. KPTV interviewed me about hooping during a hoop jam and put this nice package together that aired on December 7th.
Watch it here!
Come for a day side hoop jam and be seen on TV!
Center Space Studio
420 SE 6th Avenue – PDX
10am – 12noon
Local TV station, KPTV Fox 12, is sending a reporter and photographer to shoot a segment for their show, MORE Good Day Oregon, which airs weekdays at 9am on Channel 12. They will be at the hoop jam from 10:30am until 11:00am or so but I thought it would be fun to make it a 2-hour hoop jam (10am-12pm) for the heck of it.
If you do not want to be on camera, you can step out of the room for the taping and step back in when they are done. The segment will air on Wednesday, December 7th.
Total donations for World Hoop Day (cash and proceeds from hoops sales) = $200!!
If you could not make it to the hoop jam but still want to donate, please do!!
World Hoop Day Donations
Here’s a little video of a moment in the hoop at the WHD hoop jam in Portland, Oregon.
I used my iPod and free software but you can certainly sense the vibe of the festivities.
Today is World Hoop Day!
If you’re in Portland, OR come over to the Center Space Studio, 420 SE 6th Ave. tonight. Come anytime between 7:30pm & 10:30pm. It’s a small space but hoopers are polite and share space well.
We are asking for a minimum $5 donation to raise funds for World Hoop Day. WHD’s mission is to bring joy through the importance of play to children around the world. Our goal is to raise $500.
Please bring your happy hooping selves, hoops and munchies to share and your iPods with your favorite hoop jam mixes! This is also Veteran’s Day. Please read this wonderful message from World Hoop Day Founder, Annie O’Keeffe.
I’ll be interviewing random hoopers for Episode 2 of HulaHoopla: A Podcast for Hoopers.
Join in the festivities and meet local hoopers.
We got together at our first night side weekly hoop jam at the Bamboo Grove Salon (we are looking for a new space for this time slot, btw!) and rehearsed and performed the official World Hoop Day Dance! Thank you to Laurie, Kundalini, Fawn, Shelly and Kay for playing and to Renee for shooting the video. I hope I spelled everybody’s name correctly!
We’ll repeat the rehearsal, performance and recording at Center Space, 420 SE 6th Ave., PDX during our World Hoop Day fund raiser hoop jam on 11.11.11 starting at 7:30pm.
Hoopnotica is running a campaign to have a Hoop Off between Jay Leno and Conan O’Brien. Who know? It could happen! You can check out the HOOP OFF – Leno vs. Conan on Facebook. Lots of fun posts from other hoopers. I rallied of few of my hooper gal pals and came up with a slogan and campaign sign.
Hmmm….I can’t upload the sign at the moment but you can find it on the HulaHoopla Facebook Fan Page. Not a fan???? Well, what are you waiting for?
We took some pictures and made a fun little video to assist in the campaign. Check it out!
And please share it with your friends. Thank you! BTW, I am “Bad Kitty” in this video, the last hooper. That is my hoop troupe performer name. Meow!
Come play with the LooLoo’s EVERY Thursday at the Bamboo Grove (except Thanksgiving — gotta nap!) starting November 4th. All levels welcome!
Take a break from your busy work week and learn basic hoop moves, parctice new tricks, play, dance, get inspired, de-stress, relax and go bcak to work recharged! We will provide hoops and music but feel free to bring in your iPods & MP3 players to share your favorite hoop tunes.
LOCATION: 134 SE Taylor Avenue, PDX.
The entrance is on SE 2nd Avenue between the two potted bamboo plants.
TIME: 12pm – 2pm
FEE: $3 minimum donation
Who are the LooLoo’s?
The LooLoo’s are a killer performance hoop troupe comprised of Jill (aka Queen Loo) of Hoop to My Loo, myself (aka Bad Kitty Loo) of HulaHoopla, ZigZagLoo, and Trish (aka Doctor Spin).
Queen Loo, Bad Kitty Loo, and TBA Loo had their first rehearsal last night – AWESOME!!!
We’re available NOW for parties, BTW. Woo Hoo(p)!
